Painting brick or pintura de ladrillo

I have a question about painting Mexican brick.

Our home was built in 1979 with a Mexican brick veneer and siding. We need to replace the siding this year. Over the years the Mexican brick has faded, worn and the mortar has separated. I would like to fill in the holes and paint the brick the same color we paint the siding. However, I do not want to create a maintenance issue of repainting more often than the siding needs to be painted or create a situation were maintenance cost is out of line to keep it up. Can Mexican brick be painted and look good? Will the brick need to painted often and do we risk the paint peeling? Will a stucco like skim on top of the brick promote the painting? What is your opinion of painting the brick considering that it is what it is?
