Charlie:
Lori in Anderson, Texas. She’s building a living space inside a metal building. She wants to know what layers do you recommend from the sheet metal inward? You’ve got the metal sheathing, then what, then what, then what?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom:
Well, I assume she’s going to frame it up with wood and that’s what you usually do inside there. You just go ahead and put the framing up and go ahead and insulate it like a house, which would be an R13 in the walls.
Charlie:
Do you frame the wood frame inside the steel building?
Tom:
You do. You don’t go into the metal. You take it out just about an inch and just you lose a little space, but it’s better not to touch the metal because the metal should have its own insulation on there so it doesn’t sweat. If it doesn’t have it, it needs to have that little vinyl insulation on there.
Charlie:
Okay, so that’s her question. What you’re saying is …
Tom:
Against the metal you put the vinyl metal insulation, or they have some spray foams and stuff. You can go to someone like Mueller Inc here in Texas and find out what kind of insulation products they have just for the metal so it doesn’t sweat. Then you build it like a house on the inside, 2×4’s with R13 and then sheet rock.
Charlie:
A box in a box.
Tom::
You really are, yeah.
Charlie:
All right.
