Lead vs aluminum roof vent jacks

Hi Tom,

I need to have several of my old lead roof vent jacks replaced. Should I replace them with new lead ones or are the galvanized aluminum ones that fit over the old lead ones worth using?

Thanks,

Harry

Tom: I think the ones you’re thinking, the galvanized ones are called high hats, and the high hat is not a good one to use because you have to remove it to snake out your drain line if it ever gets clogged, because it has a little top on it. That’s why we use lead jack because they stay open all the time, and I would just replace the lead jacks, and what I would do is have your roofer put on that lead jack a little peel and stick rubberized material and paint it to match the color of the roof. Just a quick spritz with a spray pan is all it takes, and it keeps the squirrels from eating it.
