Keeping dust out of your HVAC system

Charlie: John says you had a caller, Tom, that talked about having a dust issue in the house, and it turns out that the issue he had is that his plenum is a box section … The part that goes up through into the attic there. He found out there was a crack in his. It was sucking dust in. He fixed that and put in a media filter, and solved his dust problem. I guess that’s a common way of getting dust into your AC.

Tom: It is, and a lot of people say “Tom, my AC is causing all the dust in my house.” Most cases, it’s not. It can be caused by the AC in a different way, like fresh air returns not being there, positive negative pressures. You also have deteriorating carpet. You have ceiling texture that hasn’t been painted in so long it’s actually dusting down into the house. The one thing about air conditioner, and the first thing you check if you have any real issue, is you gotta check your ducts. That means your return air plenums, and these chase rays they build. That’s just a no brainer. That’s the first step.
