CHARLIE:
Theresa up in Spring says, “My daughter and her family of 6 just bought a house that’s about 8 years old. The AC was not cooling so she called out the AC guy. He told them they needed Freon. He pumped 2 pounds of Freon into that system, didn’t check for freon leaks, and it doesn’t seem right to everybody.”
Podcast: Play in new window
She says she listens all the time and remembers you saying it isn’t necessary to put Freon in a system because it’s not going to leak but he charged them 85 dollars a pound but, and this is the kicker, she has one of those warranties and the warranty only paid 10 dollars.TOM:
Well, that’s probably true. I can’t get into warranties because they’re worthless as it begins, but as far as should you check for leaks. If it’s actually 2 pounds and sometimes it’s not. Sometimes the guys exaggerate but yeah, you’ve got to check for leaks because it’s just going to leak out. It might be a slow leak, it might be a fast leak, but you’ll find out soon enough if it’s slow or fast because it’ll quit working quicker. That’s just the bottom line. I will tell you this. The going rate for Freon being put in and reclaimed and being bought by the guys, that’s a very fair price. That’s not an outrageous price so I would say they probably aren’t ripping her off because he’s charging a very fair price right now.
CHARLIE:
But your warranty. It lives down to the expectations we tell people about. There are people who swear by them. We swear at them, so there it is.
TOM:
Yeah. I’m not a warranty guy.
