Tom: Pain in the Butt.
Charlie: Or Point Blank, right?
Tom: Yeah, there ya go…
Charlie: There’s Point Comfort and Point Blank. They’re on opposite sides of town. They really are. All right. Tom says, “I’m looking for exterior paint solutions.” He says, “We live about 60 feet off Lavaca Bay, and our home is only six years old and it’s already showing a lot of fade. What should I be using this close to salt water that’ll give me at least 10 years of longevity on the color?”

Tom: The color is an issue if you do a specialty color. Now, if you go to a paint store and say, “Oh, I like this color right here,” and it’s not one of their regular colors, then they can mix it, and they can make the color, but chances are they can’t guarantee the color. The color will have problems.
If you go to a paint store, like Pittsburgh or Sherwin-Williams, or whatever, and say, “I want one of your colors that you guys have done the research and development on,” then you’re going to have better luck. That’s what happens with a lot of people when it comes to colors, is they want specialty fancy pastels, pinks and blues, and all these different things, and they don’t hold up in the sun. Because, it’s a beautiful color, and it’s specialty made, but it has not been researched and developed. So, they can mix it, they can match it, but if you talk to them about a warranty on a color, if you get a specialty color, they cannot warranty it. So, I would tell people find the color that they have already developed, that they know that works.
Charlie: Would you say a lighter color would last longer than a darker color?
Tom: The formulations are all different. The only thing I can say about color, and when it comes to sunshine, is yellow holds up better than any other color on the market. It’s been a proven fact all the way in history of paint.
Why? I really couldn’t give you all the science behind it. Probably ’cause it mimics the same thing that the sun gives it. But, that’s the only thing I can say. Colors are so specialty. You have to be very careful with them.
Charlie: You know, it’s the first color that registers in your eye, is yellow?
Tom: See? I mean, ….
