Charlie:
You’ve got another Robert. He’s in Piney Point. Well actually …
Tom:
Maybe he’s the same one.
Charlie:
Actually his mom is in Piney Point, because he’s move to Marble Falls. And, she’s got a little house over there on Briar Forest. He says, he was a part time carpenter, and listened to you for years, and now he’s at Marble Falls.
Hey, Robert you can listen to this on the stream, just so you know. All right, his question, “My 83 year old mother in-law is looking to add attic fans to her two story home on Briar Forest. She has gotten a quote for solar fans, and I thought it seemed a little too much. My question is, what type of exhaust fan do you recommend to get some of the heat out of your attic space? Kind of a trick question for you.”
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom:
This is the way I’m going to answer this.
Charlie:
Yup.
Tom:
I’m assuming she’s been in the house a long time. This is an assumption, she’s 80 plus years old. Why would you bother worrying about attic fans now?
Charlie:
I’m here to say.
Tom:
I wouldn’t do anything. That house is fine, and that’s a great area of town, and it’s not going to do her any good, unless she is just is trying to find something to occupy her time.
Solar fans are fine. They’re expensive, but I don’t know. I just don’t think it’s worth even considering.
Charlie:
You could be on to something. You could be on to something there.
Tom:
Why?
Charlie:
Well, it like the worst thing is, when my mother solves a problem, because now she’s a free floating radical looking for a problem to glom onto.
Tom:
Yeah, my mother does the same thing.
Charlie:
Yeah, yeah.
Tom:
And, I take care of my mother. She’s 86, but …
Charlie:
I think he should have her call and get like five or six more estimates and really think this out before she does anything.
Tom:
Well, yeah, call Ideal Roofing and she wants to do it, do it. My whole thing is why?
Charlie:
Yeah, exactly. Well, wouldn’t you be more likely to ask things like, does she have a ridge vent? Is there soffit vents? I mean, is there …
Tom:
Well, I can’t ask him. If he was on the air I would actually ask him.
Charlie:
But, I’m just saying …
Tom:
Yes.
Charlie:
Wouldn’t that be something to look at before you go to a powered fan?
Tom:
Well absolutely. And, how old’s the roof? And, there’s a lot of different things I would like to know about the project. But, just to say after being in the house 20 plus years. You know, “I think we need an attic vent fan.” It’s just, I don’t know …
Charlie:
I don’t know why, just …
Tom:
I can’t get past that, you know? It’s like, let’s find Mannix reruns and watch them again.
Charlie:
Are those on Netflix again?
Tom:
I don’t know.
Charlie:
Okay.
Tom:
I’m sure you can get them. If it’s too expensive, and they’re not cheap, you can have roofers give you prices. Ideal Roofing would be a good one, but I just don’t know if I’d bother putting the vent on at this point, and that house’s time and life.
