Should I replace the drip edge when replacing my roof?

Charlie: Becky in Pasadena has our last question this morning. She says she has a quote for a new roof. The quote seems reliable, except for this, Tom. “When I asked if the drip edge needed to be replaced, the roofer said, ‘It’s up to you.’ I don’t feel comfortable deciding since I’m a senior citizen,” she says, Tom. “I can’t climb up a ladder and inspect the drip edge. The roof is 20 years old, and I believe it was replaced back then,” Do you keep it, do you change it? What do you do?

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: First off, the drip edge should always be replaced on a brand new roof job. Secondly, for a roofer to tell that lady that, I wouldn’t use the roofer. Something’s wrong, or I’m not getting a full story out of somebody.
Charlie: It’s like going to the doctor. He says-
Tom: “Do you want me to take your heart out or not?”
Charlie: Does this look infected to you, Doc? He says, “I don’t know. What do you think?”
Tom: Exactly! I want the roofer to say … If you go to Ideal Roofing, they’re going to say, “We use this drip edge. We use this underlayment. We use this peel-and-stick.” You’re going to get a full warranty on that job. You’re not going to say, “Well, it’s up to you.”
Charlie: Yeah. I’m thinking, you don’t as much need to change out that drip edge, Becky-
Tom: As the roofer.
Charlie: As the roofer, right. Exactly.
