Do water softeners have a pre-filter?

We are curious about last weekend’s comment that you’d never changed the filter in your Aquatex water softener unit. Like the caller, we change ours monthly and it is dark brown. You stated that you didn’t think you had a pre-filter, but what did you find out from Aquatex?

Tom: None of them have a filter in the water softener and Charlie, this is what threw me on the whole question. It is not part of the water softening system. I did call John at Aquatex saying, this is what I was told. At many of their installs and just happened to be one of their installs by the way. They go to certain parts of town and they’re very well versed on the quality of the water in different areas of town and some of the areas have a lot of sediment. They add a second piece of equipment which is a sediment filter before it gets into the unit. That’s what these people have and that’s why it’s so dirty because Aquatech’s had enough sense to know how bad the quality of water that they’re getting.
I don’t know what part of town they live in and I don’t know who’s giving them their water but Aquatex knows this area very well and some areas do need a sediment filter.
