Do I need to put plywood under my granite counter top?

https://media.blubrry.com/homeshow/homeshowradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/ASK-Tom-Becky_DeckUnderGranite_110115.mp3

Podcast: Play in new window

Charlie: Becky is Hempstead writes us:

We’re building a new home and our building supervisor told us he did not plan to install any plywood decking for the installation of the 2 cm granite counter top. The cabinets are job built, currently nothing on top of them. Any advice would be appreciated on this.

So the reason… it doesn’t sound like he’s going to put decking underneath the granite.

Tom: I’m not sure if it needs it or not. I don’t know enough about her granite, but if it’s 3/4 inch granite, lets talk in terms that I can understand.

Charlie: 2 centimeters?

Tom: Ah, forget the centimeters. If it’s approximately 3/4 inch granite, you have to have a deck under it. If it’s the thicker stuff, which is about 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 inch and I think that is the centimeter one, and I apologize to all our European friends, you don’t need a deck.
