My house was built in 1974 and the home great room has a brick fireplace. I think I would like to update the fireplace by covering the brick with stone.
What would you recommend? I am concerned that it would devalue house.

Tom’s Answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: If it looks good it won’t devalue by any means, and it’s easily done putting stone veneer on brick makes a good substrate for it, so that’s fine. It’s like anything. Does it look good or does it look bad? If it looks bad it’s not going to be good. I mean, I don’t know what else to say. If it looks good I’d definitely say do it.
Charlie: Well, and that El Dorado stone comes in all kinds of colors and finishing.
Tom: You bet, and thin, and they’ll just mortar it right on there, so it will work fine.
Charlie: Yeah, like when you’re doing that Austin sandstone kind of look you can do that.
Tom: Yeah, they’ve got, what, 30 different styles I do believe. Something like that.
Charlie: A bazillion, so and there’s a video at www.homeshowradio.com of somebody who did exactly that, Shirley.
Tom: That’s right. We went over to that house; didn’t we? That was a lot of stone they put on that.
Charlie: They did, and it looked great!
Tom: I never saw the finished.
Charlie: Well let me tell you, when they were putting it in, I remember you thought, “Man, that’s a lot of stone.”
Tom: Well, yeah, it was going to be pretty dramatic in that room.
Charlie: But it worked.
Tom: Oh, cool!
Charlie: When it was done it really worked well. You see that www.homeshowradio.com if you’re interested in doing that.
