Should I use closed cell spray foam insulation in my walls and attic?

Charlie:
Alan in League City writes to us, “What are your thoughts on the use of Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation in the walls and attics of homes?”

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom:
I’m not a big fan of it, I wouldn’t recommend it. First off, it’s too expensive for the payback. It makes a home too tight, and then you have other issues that you have to handle, mechanical systems like dehumidifiers and fresh-air intakes and a lot of different things that you might not have to deal with later. There’s also just a water problem issue, it’s too tight and the vapor can’t transfer. Why they’re trying to reinvent the wheel when we already have the answers,  I don’t understand.

Charlie:
Do you need a house to breathe here?

Tom::
Absolutely, man. Sometimes it would be 100% humidity out there.
