How do I stop the leaks on a recently installed a lightweight cement roof deck?

Charlie: Tracy in Lake Jackson has one for you, Tom. We were talking about roofs a minute ago and air conditioners on the roof. I can only think of one worse thing you can do with a flat roof and she did it. She says “On one section of my house I have a small, flat roof, and my roof repair contractor said we could make it a cement roof deck. I thought it was a great idea, so he poured some lightweight concrete on it, and sloped it perfectly. I’ve had two leaks since it was poured two months ago. I hope some sort of sealer will help. What’s your advice?”

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: Tear it all off and do it right. There’s no sealer. There’s no sealer. Okay? That’s all I got to say. But, tear it off and you have to do a roof system, you have to do a TPO. You have to …

Charlie: A what?

Tom: … Do all the special flashing that needs to be done.

Charlie: You just said a TPO. What’s that?

Tom: That’s a type of roofing that goes under, like, a lightweight concrete.

Charlie: Okay.

Tom: You can’t just pour a lightweight concrete on a flat roof. What happens is, is most flat roofs are somewhat asphalt based and then you put concrete with lime and it just eats it up. But it’s all about the details and that’s why you get someone like Ideal Roofing. If you wanna have a deck, you can have a deck, but to just to pour something on top and say hey, you got a deck, nah, I don’t think so.
