I am retired, living in the Tomball area. I own two lots in Tomball amd I want to build a small retirement house, 1000 square feet. We have no kids and it is only the two of us. Can you recommend a builder who will build a small house?

Tom: Well you’re got Master Key Builders who is a good strong sponsor of the show. They can do a great job for you. There’s a difference between production homes and custom homes so be careful. Get a true custom home builder, especially for a retirement home. Because you’ll want little things in there that the other builders won’t offer, and think about times where you have wider doorways and easier access to the bathrooms and things of that nature. Because it is a retirement home and you should be able to live comfortably as long as possible there. Hopefully for your, the full existence.
Charlie: And to add on to your point just a wee bit there, you talked about custom and production builders.
Tom: Yes.
Charlie: There are people who hold themselves out as custom builders who are not.
Tom: That’s right. And they’d say you can have your custom choices, or A, B, or C. Custom is anything you want as long as you pay for it.
Charlie: Right and that’s why Master Key, you may pay a few more bucks per square feet.
Tom: Well yeah you’re going to, because you’re going to get a lot more per square foot for what you want. Also, being in the business, as a custom builder you never build the same home twice. You go to a production builder; they build the same home over and over and over again and give you three different options. So they say they’re different but they’re really not. Except for color of tile, builder beware.
