Charlie: “… Holly in Uptown. She says, “Our house has an exterior medium colored brick. I think you probably know where this is going. There are stains on the brick from the secondary drain pan condensate running over it.” And it’s happened, she says, for a long time.
Two workmen, two of them, have tried to remove the stain with power washing but that hasn’t worked at all. She now believes they have tried a detergent. She doesn’t believe they’ve used a detergent or anything. Tom, what’s your recommendation for getting that stain off the brick? Or is it even possible?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: “It might not be. The key you said there, a long time. If it’s run long enough and it just keeps staining that brick, that brick can be permanently stained like anything can be permanently stained. As far as detergent goes, the only thing you can try is laundry detergent, like a Tide or whatever you might have around the house. But besides that, I don’t know if you’re ever going to get the stain out, but most importantly, if you don’t want it to get worse, or you might want it to actually go away on its own, quit dripping water all over it. They need to stop that drip, whatever it is.”
Charlie: “I was going to say, it’s time to get a AC check.”
Tom: “Yeah, I don’t know why that’s doing that. It needs to be taken care of. But, I will tell you this, there are brick restoration companies out there and I had one come to mind when we had to do some brick repair. Most of them, if not all of them, have a dye or a way to stain it to match it and blend it back.”
Charlie: “Okay.”
Tom: “Okay. That is a possibility. That might be what you have to do, but you got to stop the drip.”
