Best Ridge Vents For Your Home?

I need to replace a roof that is 18 years old and when I put this roof on I used your advice: Elk Prestique#2 with 90 lb. felt (rolled roofing material) in the valleys.

The roof never leaked and it survived Ike just fine. But the renters have moved out so I think it is wise for me to replace it now. What is the best brand of shingle to use now? Also, I want to install a ridge vent. Which brand of ridge vent is least likely to fail at a given combination of windspeed and horizontal rain? Also, I have a couple of air hawks. Should I leave them or remove them and plug the holes when I get the ridge vent?

Jeff

Charlie: … any more?
Tom: Not any more.  And going back to the old Pristake [ph] too, they were the original ones that had the fiberglass mat.
 Charlie: Okay.
Tom: They weren’t all organic like all of the others that were failing, but nowadays they’re all fiberglass mats.  So whatever company you chose to do the roof, we have a sponsor Ideal Roofing, they’re a GAF dealer.  So of course I would use GAF shingles so you can get the strong warranty.  If your using a different roofer, that has a Old Pristake [ph] dealer, or OC, which is Ownes Coorning, then I’d probably use the shingle that they want to use so you could get the strong warranty and they don’t, you know, they have, they have some cloud with the company.
Charlie: I remember when we told Jim about a leak problem.  Remember the video that we did a couple of weeks ago …
 Tom: Yes.
Charlie: … with the leak problem?  We told him about it, we didn’t tell him anything more about it than that.  And he, and he walks up and says, I know what the problem is.  You could, he could tell it was on the third story, he could tell from the ground what the problem is.  I got up there, bam there it was and the leak went away.  So, just a, when your talking about Ideal, these are guys who really know roofing backward and forward.
Tom: Yes.  He doesn’t like to go up three stories though.  That’s why he like to do it from the ground.
Charlie: What – what are you saying?  Let me make this clear, Jim never went up the ladder.
Tom: No, no Jim doesn’t, he’s funny.
 Charlie: Oh, right.
Tom: But he knows his stuff.
 Charlie: Right
