Charlie:
Jeff in Webster says the builder of his new house painted two of his smaller full bathrooms with a flat paint, which shows every wet drip mark and other spots when there’s a lot of steam in the room. Should the wall be painted with a satin finish instead, if nothing else, for health and mildew reasons?

Tom:
I don’t know about health and mildew. You’re going to survive either way. But most bathroom and kitchen paints are either eggshell or satin, only because they can be wiped down and dried off better, and they don’t hold the moisture as much. You could look at that flat paint job as a primer. You just come back with the same color with a satin or eggshell.
Charlie:
Yeah. It’s flat. You don’t have to put a liquid deglosser on that.
Tom:
No. It’s ready for it to take the other paint job, so it will be pretty easy to do, but I think it would be better to do that, yes.
Charlie:
Go with a satin or something.
Tom:
Usually an eggshell is what people are using now for the really high quality paints.
