Can I replace or repair the rotted out bottom eight inches of my back door that gets a lot of splash-up when it rains?

Charlie: Jeremy  in Porter  says his back door gets a lot of splash-up when it rains. Because of this the bottom eight inches or so has rotted out. He wants to know, can he repair this, or does he have to replace the door jam?

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: I’d probably, if it’s 8, 10 inches up and the door and the jam is all rotted, I’d get a whole new door.  And, the things is, everybody asks, “Can I just fix this?,” but we got to fix the problem. We’re getting splashing all over this door. Why it’s splashing? I don’t know, but you need to get it stopped, whether it’s an overhang, a gutter, some kind of protection for the door. If you just keep replacing the door, it’s just going to just keep being messed up.
