Are baffles necessary?

We are getting ready to add insulation to our two story home which was built in the early 70’s.
The radiant barrier has already been added when we put on a new roof which has ridge vents.
The first company suggested that we install 60 baffles to every other cavity in the attic for ventilation.
The second company has given us a rate for R40. However, he said we do not need baffles!

Tom First comment is just go R30, don’t waste your money on the 40 unless they’re giving it to you for free. Even that, I wouldn’t even take it for free, you don’t need it. The baffles, if you need them, if the insulation’s going to be shoved in there to where it doesn’t leave any space, then yes. If you don’t need them and they placed the insulation properly and don’t close off your soft advance, depending a lot on the pitch of the roof, then you won’t need them. It’s really hard to tell and at some places, you might, in some places you might not. It’s there just to keep the insulation from clogging up the airflow. That’s going to be determined on how the insulation goes in your roof pitch.
Charlie There’s so many little variables to putting insulation. It’s not just go pour it in there.
Tom That’s right and people wanted just pack it up and R40’s too thick anyway. If you go down to R30, you have less chance of blocking up those sockets.
