Hi Tom,
I have an enclosed garage (21′ x 20′) with a wall unit air conditioner. I am planning on building a music studio room within the garage (about 15′ x 18′). The music room will be free standing and double walled. The walls will have 2 layers of sheet rock with green glue between them. The idea is that the room be as sound proof as possible.
I was planning on puting a dual hose portable air conditioner in the music room, and keeping the original wall unit installed for the rest of the garage. My plan was to run both the air intake and out put hoses through the double walls and out through the original garage wall to the outside. I’m concerned that this unit will be noisy, and will also create a sound leak. I am now considering a split unit with 2 inside units (one for the existing garage, and one for the music room. My consern with this option is that the split units seem to cool the air in the room, as opposed to bringing in air from outside. Will this be an issue since the room will be pretty tightly sealed?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Todd
Tom: I don’t think the split system is an option at all because the motor’s in the room and it’s a ductless system so the whole air handler hangs on the wall. Putting the air handler away from the room is better. To quiet down the velocity or the sound the air makes from the velocity that it has is to enlarge the return air so it doesn’t have any restriction on there and it flows real nice and clean …
Charlie: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Tom: … and flex duct, instead of a metal duct, will be much quieter so he should consider that and I’d rarely say flex duct is better, but in this case, for noise, it certainly is.
