CHARLIE: Jonathan in Willowbend says, I have a two ton AC unit cooling about 400 square feet of his bathroom and bedroom. And I just had a company come out and clean my registers and ducts because they smell. The company finished the job back in April, but I still smell the mildew and the vents look clean and all. Do they need to be cleaned, or is it possible I have too much AC for this space?
Podcast: Play in new window
TOM: Well, two tons for 400 square feet is twice as much as what you would need. But, it can be tweaked if you get the right people to slow down the fan speed and let it cycle properly. I don’t know if that’s what the smell is or not. It could be back to the evaporator coil having what they call that “smelly sock syndrome” It doesn’t wash itself properly, so it gets dirty. Cleaning the ducts and cleaning the registers I will tell you will not help. So that’s one thing he did that was a waste of time.
CHARLIE: But they sure look spiffy.
TOM: Well, you got to clean them, it’s just not going to help the smell. I mean you still, please clean them. It’s the evaporator coil. Something’s going on in there.
