Robert in Tomball writes to us. It’s a different Robert, and maybe he’s moved since he wrote the first one, I’m not sure. Anyway, Tom, he says, “I’m replacing my AC unit, was wondering what I need SEER-wise. I have a 21 hundred square foot home in Spring. The house is a one story and the windows are original double paned. They were here when we bought it five years ago, for what that’s worth.” Is a SEER tonnage all that? What do you recommend to Robert?

SEER, I don’t get crazy on the SEERS: 13, 14s are the starting point and that’s good enough. It’s going to be more efficient than anything you’ve ever had, and simple. Simple to run, simple to install, simple to maintain, not necessarily in that order. But as far as the tonnage goes, a five ton unit. One unit will handle the house. Don’t go four and a half, go five. You’ll need that extra oomph on the summer, and just have it all put in there nicely.
