Tom, What are adequate shingles to put on my roof?

Charlie:
James up in the Northline area says he’s about to put on a roof with GAF Timberline HD shingles. Those are good shingles. He says it’s a 30 pound felt. He wants to know is that an adequate underlayment for this installation.

Tom:
It’s not a 30 pound felt. They don’t make 30 pound felt anymore. It’s number 30 felt which is 7 pounds, or excuse me 15 pounds. A number 15 felt is now 7 pounds because they use a fiberglass mat.

Charlie:
Okay.

Tom:
The answer is yes. The felt he’s using is fine.

Charlie:
What we’re calling you is wrong.

Tom:
It’s this whole idea about 30 pound is …

Charlie:
Okay.

Tom:
It’s the way it used to be.

Charlie:
Yes, go for it. You’re good to go.

Tom:
Yeah.
