What is an acceptable SEER Rating for my AC Unit?

Charlie: Ted over in South side Place says a friend of his moved into a 2200 square foot single story home, they had the A/C checked by a specialist, the technician said it’s leaking Freon and recommended a 4 ton unit with a seer rating of 17 or 18 for efficiency. What Ted wants to know Tom, is a 14 seer is going to be just as acceptable?

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: There’s a lot of unknowns for me to answer thins, yeah, 14 is fine, I wouldn’t go more than a 14. But here you’ve got a guy coming in to do an inspection, he says it’s leaking Freon in the attic. First think I want to know is where’s the leak and why don’t we fix it? You could probably fix it for a few hundred bucks, if there’s truly a leak. For him to find a leak on just an initial inspection I think, is probably pushing it, I think he’s just trying to up-sell a unit so I’d get a different opinion first.
