DIY Electrical Panel Mistakes

So the first thing that we notice is that the wiring is really sloppy. I’m Will with Right Touch Electrical, and today, we’re going to take a look at this panel installation. So our customer called us out because they want us to inspect their new panel. They just bought this property. Now, in the buying process, they wanted to change the electrical panel. It was unsafe. The other owner would not let them do that. They changed it themselves. And so when we came out, we found a lot of different problems. So let’s take a look at it right here. So the first thing that we see is it was very sloppy, the labeling. And so what we’re going to do is we’re going to properly label it and make sure that it’s legible.

The other major problem is, this is a brand new panel and they just moved in here, there’s only one spot here left. And so easily they could outgrow this panel and have to either add a subpanel or a brand new panel in the future. And for doing a brand new panel, that is just unfortunate. So let’s take a look and see what’s going on inside here. So the first thing that we notice is that the wiring is really sloppy. I mean, we just feel like, I mean, that’s not the end of the world when it comes to functionality of electrical system, but we just feel like you should do a great job. We noticed there’s no surge protector. So this is very important, especially in the Houston area. There’s a lot of lightning strikes, you want a surge protector and it’s required, national electric code.

The other major thing here is there’s an old ground wire. I don’t know if you can see it. It’s that metal cabling right there. That comes down and exits the home. This is the original grounding system to the home, which is no longer valid anymore. It’s no longer safe. Probably 10 years after this home was built, that grounding system was obsolete. And so now it is required to add two ground rods, six foot apart and also install a inner system bonding clamp to bond the cable and phone systems and internet systems so everything is properly secure. And so what we’re going to do for them today is we’re going to put a surge protector in, we’re going to upgrade the grounding system and we’re going to properly label the panel.

It’s going to be safe for them. But the flip side is, you guys, is that a lot of times there’s two aspects to the electrical system. There’s the functionality, lights working, plugs working. That is done. These people did that. But the safety aspects usually get left undone because normal people don’t know whether that’s installed or not and you never know if you have it until it’s too late. So the safety aspects of the electrical system is the most important and that’s what we’re going to take care of them for today, so.
