Dear Tom,
I hope you can help. I own a townhome built in 1978. A few days ago the kitchen lights and appliances blacked out. Centerpoint came out and of course, all was working until an hour after he left. The gentlemen checked the power to the meter and the breaker both were fine. He suggested that it’s the URD drop from the meter to the transformer. HOA says to hire a high voltage electrician to diagnose the problem.
My brother who doesn’t live in same area has similar problem and Centerpoint stated rain could cause the problem.
How can I find out where the cause is before hiring an electrician?
What can I do to reduce the cost of repair? Thank you for your help.

Tom: I think he needs to hire an electrician. Period. Remember this, the transformer if it’s a problem, that’s going to be Centerpoint. Once it leaves that transformer, the wire and everything else, that’s totally up to the homeowner’s responsibility to take care of. That’s why I’m not a big fan of underground wiring. I know you have to see it above ground but at least Centerpoint takes care of it.
What I would tell you right at this time, hire a good electrician. Right Touch Electrical, if you’re here in town, call them and have them come out and troubleshoot it. I hope it’s going to be something simple.
