Should I unplug my recirculating hot water pump when I go on vacation?

Charlie: Andy lives at Carmel-by-the-Sea-

Tom: Carmel.

Charlie: … in California. Carmel.

Tom: Could be caramel.

Charlie: Caramel. Is it Caribbean or Caribbean? Depends on your income. All right. So he says he wants to thank you because apparently we helped him.

Tom: You’re welcome.

Charlie: He wrote to us earlier about turning off his water heater when he left, and we answered him earlier. Well, now he wants to know, he says that he has a hot water recirculating pump. He says, “Should I unplug this thing when I turn off the main water valve on vacation?” He thinks he should. What do you think? (more…)

Why are my breakers getting hot and popping for various kitchen appliances?

Charlie: Suzanne from Katy, has our next one from homeshowradio.com, that’s where these come from, by the way.   She says, “My home is two years old and the breakers just started tripping when I run the dishwasher or the garbage disposal or washer. Not running them at the same time, now.” She says, “The breakers get hot. An electrician came out and replaced one breaker, the one for the dishwasher, but the problem’s still happening. I’m not sure why all three weren’t replaced. My husband dealt with them once upon a time and the wiring in the kitchen island was checked and it looked fine but, what say you?” (more…)

What is a good flooring to install in upstairs bedrooms?

Charlie: James in The Heights. He says, “Tom, we’re buying a town house in The Heights in March. And we have about seven weeks to complete our pre move-in projects. And I’m stuck on what kind of flooring to install in about 700 square feet of upstairs bedrooms. It currently has a carpet plywood decking. And we removed the carpet.” He says. “And we’d like to install either natural or engineered hardwood. Any preference on which would be appreciated.” (more…)
