Hey Tom,
I want to build a 10′ floating desk along the wall in my bedroom and I don’t have any experience. Do you know where I could get DIY instructions or should it be done by a professional? If so who would you recommend?
Thanks in advance,
Cory
Tom: Well, Charlie, I think you can probably more helpful than I can because you are the wiz when it comes to finding things online. I think it’s a Google time to go and Google these kind of things and if you want to find some plans, maybe some examples, don’t you think it would come up if you just start searching? Floating furniture, staircases, things like that.
Charlie: Two thoughts. I think what Eisenhower said in World War II this.
Tom: Yes?
Charlie: Planning is essential, plans are worthless.
Tom: Okay.
Charlie: Another one that I heard recently that knowledge does not equal experience.
Tom: Well, I’m going to take it a step further. Lewis wanted to do some research and then you call Jeff Roberts, who’s a real expert at building cabinetry and things like that and pull it off, but what if he found something he really likes online pictures and said, “hey, Jeff, can you build this?”
Charlie: Jeff would do it.
Tom: That’s what I’m thinking will happen, unless it’s simple enough to where you’re just going to put a door up and let if float.
Charlie: When we were remodeling the kitchen, and you’re going to see all this in a video you and I are going to do in a couple weeks, but I made the mistake of showing Sandy a picture of this banquette seat in a kitchen.
Tom: I remember the story. Yes.
Charlie: You know what I have in my new kitchen?
Tom: Do you use it?
Charlie: A lovely banquette seat.
Tom: A banquette seat.
Charlie: And Jeff Roberts did it.
Tom: Did you show the picture to Jeff?
Charlie: That’s the point. That’s where I’m going here. Thanks to Mr. Buzz-kill, get to the punchline before me. Yeah. No, that’s exactly what happened.
Tom: How many people showed me pictures and said, “Tom, when you build my house I want this in it.” They would come with three-ring binders of pictures.
Charlie: No!
Tom: The bathroom, the door knobs, the doors, everything.
Charlie: Yeah.
Tom: It didn’t always turn out that way.
Charlie: We’ll talk more about Jeff in the process later but out advice to Cory here is find what you want, show Jeff a picture and Jeff will build it.
Tom: Well you know, we talk about, just real quick, Jeff Roberts and kitchens and bathrooms, but if you have custom cabinetry, out of all our sponsors, those are the ones that can build some of the finest cabinets, custom, no matter what they might be.
