Vinyl vs fiberglass or composite replacement windows. We’re really having a tough time deciding who is telling us the truth about the pros and cons of each type of window. Obviously the price difference is incredible. We have a 500k home so we definitely don’t want to cheap out if vinyl is really going to be below the level that should be in this price range of house, but we can’t really see where there is so much difference to justify the huge cost increase.

Tom: Either way is going to be an upgrade so I’m not going to say one’s bad and one’s good. It just doesn’t work that way. On that question, he said are they giving him different sales pitches and what are they telling him? I don’t know. They very well could be very truthful because there is an advantage. With a composite window which is a state-of-the-art new window, the frames are smaller, the frames are stronger. They can handle a more efficient glass because of the heat buildup. You can go into bigger openings and have windows bigger without having to go to a metal reinforced vinyl.
You have a lot of different options with them. Vinyl have been good and a mainstay for a long time and certainly is going to be better than anything he has. The composite, there’s no doubt; like anything you can always get good, better, best, and it’s the best. He’s going to have to make that decision for himself.
Charlie: It’s the same thing really, when you come right down to it.
Tom: Yeah. Here’s another option. If you wanted hurricane glass, well, it has to go in vinyl. It doesn’t go on composite for the most part, so you have some other options you have to look at too, but quite frankly, the composite is better than the vinyl in many ways and the vinyl is still better than what you have.
Charlie: I’ll bet you my lunch money that in Kingwood, hurricane glass is not a concern.
Tom: No, but some people, it is to them.
Charlie: Okay.
Tom: That’s why one of our sponsors, Gulf Coast Windows, they have all the options so that’s always nice too and they’re going to give you those options, so go to a company that doesn’t just sell you one thing, but has all the things to sell you.
