Charlie: Nicholas in Spring says, “I’m looking at getting both my condensers and furnaces replaced this year, Tom. I have a 2 1/2 ton upstairs, 3 1/2 ton downstairs, and the house is just about 3,100 square feet. The units are about 14 years old, and they run hard to keep the house at 75, even when it’s 100 outside. My question: can I jump to three tons upstairs and four tons downstairs?”
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: Yes. You know, my philosophy, Charlie, a little bit bigger is a little bit better. That doesn’t mean you just slap a big system in.
Charlie: That’s right.
Tom: Then turn it on, full blast.
Charlie: You’ll see him at the all you can eat buffet.
Tom: Yes, king buffet. Anyway, it has to be tweaked, so it dehumidifies. You want a really good installer to deal with the fan speed and the temperature drop across the coil. There’s all kinds of little nuances that go with having a little bit bigger system than … say the load calculations would tell you to have.
Charlie: Sure.
Tom: But yes, if you want it 72 and to cycle properly, and it’s 100 degrees out, you can have it. I know I do.
