Charlie:
Otis, in Inwood, writes to us. He says, in a related question, “What brand of AC condenser do you recommend, Tom?”
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom:
Don’t care. This is a really … We’re shooting through the hips today.
Charlie:
Don’t care?
Tom:
I care about the company you hire.
Charlie:
Tom cares about you, Otis.
Tom:
I do, and I care about the company you hire because all the systems today are made very efficient. All the condensing units and evaporator coils and this and that, they’re all comparable to one another. It’s all on the install. If you hire Absolute Comfort Air, they’re going to be a dealer of some kind of brand.
Charlie:
The American Standard, I think, is their lead dog.
Tom:
That could be, except they don’t fix all their units, and sometimes you deal with Lennox and sometimes deal with Carrier. If that’s the company you hire, you get the unit that they deal with because they have the best service capabilities. They’re able to get the parts and stuff and get everything you need, so go with the dealer, not the brand.
Charlie:
Does it matter if they match inside and outside?
Tom:
They have to match, but it doesn’t have to be the same brand.
Charlie:
That’s what I’m saying, so if he has an Amana evaporator he could have a different brand condenser.
Tom:
No, as long as everything matches up right, but usually, today, when you change a unit, if you want that SEER rating and you want all the bells and whistles to work right, you usually end up changing the whole thing today.
Charlie:
You match the efficiency of the two, and you’re good?
Tom:
Absolutely.
Charlie:
All right.
