Hardie vs. Smart

I live in Houston and am getting ready to replace the siding on my detached garage.

I would like to know your opinion as to using Hardie Board or Smart Siding. I have read about both of them on the Internet, but can not find a significant difference other than the thickness of the product. Also, in using these products, can they be applied directly to the plywood, or should there be some type of material between the two? Is it better to use nails or screws? Just trying to cover all my bases before hearing the opinion of the contractors which can differ significantly.
