… and we’ll energize the metal of the dryer, which is a shock hazard.
Hi, this is Will with Right Touch Electrical, and today we’re going to take a look at this dryer circuit. Our customer called us because they wanted to hook up their dryer, and so we noticed a few major problems.
Number one is somebody, at some point, had illegally connected this wiring together without a proper box. This is very unsafe, could create a fire very easily if things overheated.
The second major thing that we see here is this is an old wiring system. So the dryer needs two hot wires, and you can see here they’re using the black, of course, as a hot wire, and the white is a hot wire, which that’s how they used to do it.
The ground is utilized in two purposes in this setup. One is for the grounding, and two is for the neutral, which is very dangerous, because in a dryer, the neutral can become energized in a bad situation, or if something faulty happens with the electrical system, and will energize the metal of the dryer, which is a shock hazard.
So what we’re doing today is we’re going to go into the attic, we’re going to run a brand new circuit, and there’s going to be four wires coming out here. It’s going to be two hot wires, a separate neutral, and a ground. We’re going to install a proper box and a cord for the dryer so they can plug it in. It’s going to be safe, and the neutral is going to be completely isolated from the ground, so the shock hazard will be eliminated at that point.
