Houston Heights Home Makeover

David Bush:
The Heights was actually built as a planned community. It was developed by the Omaha and South Texas Land Company, which was out of Nebraska.

Tom Tynan:
Houston Heights has lots of charm.

Terry:
It’s a great location. I mean, 15 minutes to anything in Houston.

Tom Tynan:
These houses were modern 100 years ago.

David Bush:
Small, simple Victorian houses. It’s pretty standard suburban architecture for that period.

Tom Tynan:
This home is typical Heights. A few years back, it was featured on the historic home tour. But if you look closer…

Terry:
It will start to show it’s age bad.

Rudy Escalante:
We had rotten wood, it was cracking. It had flaking paint.

Tom Tynan:
This year marks the home’s 108th birthday. Some parts aged better than others.

Terry:
Porch was getting in bad shape, I actually asked Rudy if we needed to replace it.

Rudy Escalante:
I said, “No,” we could fix it.

Tom Tynan:
A few years ago. Fixing old Heights houses was easy. Then the rules changed.

David Bush:
Now they’re designated historic district, so there are protections in place.

Tom Tynan:
Matching the work craftsman did 100 years ago takes a pro.

Rudy Escalante:
This house here is one of these houses that you’re real proud to do.

Tom Tynan:
New paint technology, protecting a piece of Heights history. They make a good pair.

Terry:
For a 108 year old house, it’s amazing.

David Bush:
Quality of the materials, the quality of the construction, they don’t build houses like this anymore.

Tom Tynan:
Rudy’s Quality Painting knows how to restore and protect old homes like this. That’s what makes them a certified home show pro. For homeshowradio.com, I’m Tom Tynan.
