Should a Reverse Osmosis unit by-pass the water softener so it doesn’t have to remove the salt the softener puts in?

Ed in Del Webb wants to install a water softening system with a reverse osmosis system for drinking but wonders if the RO unit should by-pass the water softener so it doesn’t have to remove the salt that the softener puts in.
