Charlie: Andy, from Galena Park. His son has been living in this house for ten years. Suddenly, he has very high humidity in the house. No, he hasn’t been out of the house in ten years.
Tom: This is weird, okay.
Charlie: He’s a hoarder and … no, no.
Tom: Where are we going with this?
Charlie: It’s not like that. Anyway, the bottom line is all of a sudden they got massive humidity in there.
Tom: Okay.
Charlie: It’s registering as high as 96%, and he had the AC-
Tom: Really?
Charlie: Yeah.
Tom: Whoa.
Charlie: He’s … I mean 96%, that’s … You know, I’m not real good at math, but that’s close to 100.
Tom: You have to work hard to get it that high.
Charlie: AC man comes out …
Tom: Yeah.
Charlie: Couldn’t find anything wrong. I went to-
Tom: Then maybe there’s not. Maybe something’s wrong with Andy.
Charlie: I read that question. “Yep, 96%. Seems good to me.” I mean, what air conditioning guy could walk through a house and say there’s nothing wrong if it has 96% humidity? For the love of Pete.
Tom: I don’t know what’s going on in the house. I ran across this one time in a house I built. It was not a pretty sight. The guy had 47 dogs. And we could not get the humidity below about 80%. The dogs just gave out too much-
Charlie: 47 dogs.
Tom: Yeah, in cages, it was really sick.
Charlie: Ew.
Tom: Didn’t like that at all.
Charlie: Well he-
Tom: I mean, so there are some lifestyles that actually promote this, but the bottom line is this: if he has a normal lifestyle-
Charlie: Yeah, but he’s … Hold on, there’s more data you may want-
Tom: Oh.
Charlie: We might … Hold on.
Tom: I’m sorry.
Charlie: Hold on, don’t be rushing to round everybody up and tell them it was you know, the-
Tom: The dog’s fault.
Charlie: The HVAC guy with a candle in the living room. Hold on a minute.
Tom: Understand.
Charlie: He bought a dehumidifier, and that brought it down to 53%, but we know there has to be something wrong. And to me, Tom, if he got it down to 53%, sitting next to you for the past seventeen, twenty, thirty years, however long it’s been, the … It seems to me 53% would be about what he can expect from his AC unit, isn’t it?
Tom: It’s actually very good.
Charlie: Yeah.
Tom: So, we’re back to the bad air conditioning guy, and the fact that he might … I’m only gonna throw this out here, I hope he’s listening, or, you can write him back and tell him-
Charlie: Oh, I will. Everybody who writes gets a personal email from me.
Tom: I want to make sure he’s not leaving the fan motor on the on position, but the automatic position, because that can cause just terrible havoc inside your home when it comes to humidity. That’s the one thing that I could think of that a normal lifestyle, some people do that. I argue with air conditioning contractors sometimes, because they tell people to leave it on and they should not. Not here, maybe in Arizona it’s fine, but not in Houston.
So that would be one. The other thing would be the extreme, like a lifestyle weirdness, like a dog, the dog situation. Or a bad air conditioning contractor.
