How can I stop the warm weather and humidity from causing my wood double front door to swell and stick?

Charlie: Rick in Cypress, he says, “My home is built about five years ago, Tom. I have a wood double front door. The problem is, as the weather turns warm and humid it swells and sticks and sometimes severely.” We have this problem with the back door at our house too until it cools down and then it’s quite annoying. He says, “Any suggestions?”

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: Shoot it.

Charlie: Shoot …

Tom: What are you doing?

Charlie: I am writing that down here. Shoot …

Tom: No, no, no. It’s … I’m not sure why the door is doing that.

Charlie: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Tom: It might need to be sealed on the top and the bottom.

Charlie: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Tom: And maybe somebody just ignored those areas. It could be the frame itself. It could be the house itself. Sometimes everybody blames the door and it’s not the door. It’s actually everything around the door. So, as far as when it gets humid and it swells a little bit, if you want … I wouldn’t shave it and people wanna shave doors all the time. But I tell you if you’re gonna shave the door? Shave it on the hinge side. Don’t do it on the lock side. But that means taking the door down and shaving that whole side back there and resetting those hinges. And so it gets to be very difficult.

There are companies out there that do weather stripping and they will re-fit that door into the opening better if you wanna go that route. But you got to be really careful just starting to shave doors. People do it all the time and it’s a bad idea.
