Can I adapt a motion security light sensor to turn my shop lights on automatically?

Charlie: Gilbert in Lancaster, Pennsylvania has our final question, and he wins the MacGyver, the Chadman MacGyver award goes to Gilbert this week. He says he wants to know, “Can I use a motion security light with only the sensor to install in my garage, and then use the lamp wiring to light up my shop lights that are already in there, as opposed to the little dinky ones that are on the motion sensor?”

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: You can, it’s just a motion sensor. You could just go buy a motion sensor and put it on lights and different appliances. You want to walk in and your blender come on? It’ll work. Walk-in margarita stand, and it just goes on.

Charlie: Five o’clock, all the time.

Tom: So yeah, what I’m thinking is, he might have one of those lights in his garage he didn’t use, so he wants to MacGyver it, as you say. But it is, it’s a motion sensor. As long as it’s 110 volts going through there, it’s not for low voltage, go for it.
