What type of water seal do you recommend for my outdoor deck and staircase made of treated pine?

Charlie: Brian in La Porte asks, “I know you do not recommend Thompson’s Water Seal.” And, I didn’t know you didn’t recommend that. He’s under the impression you don’t.

Tom: Well, the original Thompson’s was a wax based and it was sold heavily to the public, but it only last about six to eight months because it would wash off so quickly. Thompson’s like Zinsser products or Kilz products, there’s a lot of Olympic stain products now. They have really upped the game. That is a long time ago, so whoever wrote that Charlie, has been listening to this show for at least twenty years.

Podcast: Play in new window

Charlie: Thank you Brian.

Tom: Thank you Brian!

Charlie: So he wants to know, what do you recommend? You know what he’s doing, he’s got an outdoor deck and a staircase made of treated Pine.

Tom: And, if you want a color, if you have a pigment it will last longer. So, if you want to use a semi transparent stain, Olympic makes a good line of products. Most of the paints today are much better and that goes for stains too, are much better than they ever were back in the past. There’s some called, “Gray Away.” If it’s grayed out a little bit, it’ll help clean it up.   You also have the Wolman products, they make some too. Raincoat is one they make that’s a good clear product, so there’s a lot of them out there. And just remember this, the more pigment, the long it will last.

Charlie: More pigment, more protection.
