Is there a particular paint you recommend for repainting my back exterior door that gets southern sun exposure?

Charlie: Tracy has one from Cypress. She writes, “Tom, I need to repaint my back exterior door. It gets southern sun exposure most of the day, and the paint’s peeling and cracking, and I plan to sand off the cracked paint. Should I strip the whole thing first, or is there a particular paint you’d recommend for painting it?”

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: Exterior house paint is what you’re going to want to use. Now, you can get different sheens, so I would probably … Most doors, you’ll do at least a satin, if not maybe a semi-gloss, but it’s going to have to be an exterior product, and, I usually don’t say this with woodwork, but on the outside, stay away from oil bases. Go with the water-based paints, because oil bases will turn black with mildew and mold because of the vegetable oils in them.   So, a good quality exterior paint, the sheen and color of your choice, is all you need to do.
