Which of 3 ways should I use of how to put more vents in my roof and soffits on my small house that is having condensation problems?

Charlie: Mark, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin writes to us. He says, I’ve had three roofers give different ways on how to put more vents in my roof and soffits. It’s a small house, only 25 by 40, Tom, has two vents on the back roof, one on the south side and each vent of the house is under the eave in back, and I’m having condensation problems. I did put more insulation in the attic and maybe I stopped up some airflow in the attic. Maybe I should pull some of it out. Just have come for your advice.

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: Best way is always ridge vent soffit vents, so I would tell you, make sure your soffits are always clear. And make sure you have a lot of soffit vents. You need more soffits. You need more intake than exhaust.
Charlie: More cowbell, more soffits.
Tom: Yes.
Charlie: Got it.
Tom: More cowbells.
Charlie: More cowbells.
Tom: I’m not sure where that comes from, but okay.
Charlie: All right.
Tom: But anyway, and a ridge vent’s always gonna be the best way to go, but it you blocked it then you need to unblock it.
Charlie: What’s the, is there a ratio, Tom, of soffit vents to ridge vents?
Tom: 60% soffit, 40% ridge vents. That’s your minimum standards, and one square foot of opening for every 150 square feet of attic floor.
