What do you recommend for refinishing a front door?

Charlie:
Larry in Sharpstown is refinishing, is kind of related to James’ deck question earlier. He wants to refinish his front door and he wants to know what you recommend. He’s got a white oak original finish. He stained it with Minwax Golden Oak once upon a time and some urethane clear semi-gloss over that. What do you recommend, Tom?

Tom:
Well, what he did was fine, originally. It just weathered over time. Usually to keep it from weathering so much, he probably didn’t use the right amount of urethane on top of it. That would be at least five to seven coats. Most people stop at two. They get tired. It looks great but it doesn’t have that mil thickness that it needs to really withstand the weather.
The other thing is, if you want to do just two or three, keep some around. Every couple years, just give it a quick steel wool and put another coat on there and you can maintain a door, especially if it’s exposed to the sun.

Charlie:
This one appears to be.

Tom:
Yeah.

Charlie:
If he wants it done for him, that’s something Rudy can do isn’t it? Doesn’t he do doors?

Tom:
Oh yeah, absolutely. I do recommend anybody that does it, keep a little bit of the product around. You can’t just buy any product because it might not be compatible. Then, you can always touch it up before it gets really bad.

Charlie:
Perfect.
