What are the steps to find out if my fireplace is in working order?

Charlie:
Bobbie did  up in Champions. Neighbor of yours.

Tom:
Absolutely.

Charlie
She says, “I need to see if my fireplace is in working order.”

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom:
Okay.

Charlie
“We’ve not used it.”

Tom:
Start a huge fire, and see if your house burns down. No, don’t do that.

Charlie
Yes, you want a non-smoking house. “We have not used it since we moved in.” She says she lives in Champion Forest, and “We’d like to get gas logs on the fireplace as well.” Where does she start with this?

Tom:
Chimney sweep. They’ll do it all. Gas logs, checking for cracks, making sure the fire brick is in good shape, making sure the flue doesn’t have any cracks in it, maybe putting on a cap on the chimney. If it’s in Champion, it’s probably a real chimney, so maybe a cap needs to be replaced or installed. All those different things. Maybe a few bird nests to be cleaned out. There’s a lot of things, but a chimney sweep, a certified chimney sweep in town’s the way to go.
