Tom, How many speeds should my furnace fan have?

Furnace Fan

Charlie: Pat, up in Huffman. She says she needs an new furnace, and she’s shopping, and she’s seen two options. She can get a two speed or a variable speed. Which do you recommend for lowering the humidity?

Tom: Actually, single speed is fine if it’s installed right, so money-wise, and practicality single speed is fine. Either way, one or the other doesn’t make much difference, but it has to be installed right. Charlie, I always tell people, when you get variable speeds or when you get two speeds …
Charlie: Bells and whistles.
Tom: Yeah … you have to have a better installer who understands it, and if it breaks down don’t complain when the fan motor is, you know, $600 instead of $80. Because they’re so complicated that the parts, and replacement, and the labor on it is always going to be a lot more. I just don’t think it’s worth it.
