After hail damage a metal barn roof is being replaced. Windstorm says we have to use a plywood base under iron, that base covered with tar paper, then metal (husband built roof 30 yrs ago without such a base). The roofer has not stipulated that there are to be 1 x 4 wooden strips between the tar paper and metal. A neighbor says the metal will rust without such strips–are they needed? Roofer says they follow manufacturers directions.

Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: No. You think you should never put metal on the [‘perlins’ 00:00:02], it’s what we call the, but those 1x4s because it will sweat. You want the metal be put directly to the plywood so air doesn’t get in there and that eliminates the sweating which would eliminate the sweating. I understand in some parts of the country they do it that way, but down here it’s best to always put it on plywood directly and for wind storm also, you’ve got to do what they tell you, but there’s a good reason behind it. It will hold up better in high winds and hurricane, tropical storms, thing of that nature.
Charlie: So the roofer is right?
Tom: Yes. Okay. Cool.
Tom: Neighbors are never right. Did you notice that?
Charlie: Yeah.
Tom: Don’t ever listen to your neighbors [cross talking 00:00:39] always wrong. Even if I come over to your house, don’t listen to me.
Tom: They’re an expert on projects on your house.
Charlie: Exactly.
Tom: Look at their house, it’s falling apart.
