I have never heard any info about the location of water softener equipment.
My main house water cutoff valve is located in a front bedroom closet. Is it okay to locate the equipment in the closet? The bedroom is used as an exercise room (occasionally). If so, should I remove closet carpet? Would it be okay to put down sticky tiles?

Tom: Well, I’d use tiles with good taste. But, besides that, I think … you like that? I think it’s fine. You know, the water softener in the closet, OK. I really do. It doesn’t have to be right next to the water cut-off. It can be outside like most of them.
I think the big disadvantage, like 2 of them, one is you can’t be on a salt run with a company which is a lot easier than having to bring salt home every month or so and fill that thing up. And, secondly, you don’t take the chance of spilling a bag of salt in the house and having to clean that mess up.
Charlie: That’s true and in our house, my previous house over there on Castle Ridge, our water line was on the opposite side of where we needed to place it on the house. They were able to tee off the line, run it all the way across the property and come all the way back. We never felt a bump in the water.
Tom: No, no, just loop it. They do that. You can put it anywhere you want.
