I live in Porter and am looking to install a water softener but the best place for it seems to be in the attic (3rd floor). I don’t relish the idea of lugging 40lb bags of salt into the attic forever, but there is room in the attic next to the water heaters and easy access to electric.
My brother used to live in Lake Jackson and he said that he had installed a softener outside next to where his main line enter the house. I’d have to pour a pad, dig outside and run electric, and build a box for it.
I’m concerned about years with hard freezes (my brother said he put a light bulb in the box). Have you heard of people installing water softeners outside? Any pitfalls or other recommended installation locations?
Are outside water taps usually branched off before the cold water enters the heaters or do they tend to tee water lines for the shortest distance (use less pipe), i’d prefer not to soften outside water taps?
