Lawn Sand…
Charlie: Jerry in Deer Park writes to us. Used to have beautiful yard, the grass was probably about 3 to 4 inches above the curb. It’s not that way anymore. We want to fertilize as soon as we can, but we also think this year we should have someone deliver sand to build it up. When can we fertilize, he says, if he’s going to use sand should he fertilize first, fertilize later. They’re in Deer Park, and they’d like to pull up the dome scrubs and put some new scrubs in and so on. Bottom line is, you know what he’s talking about. He’s talking about working up the height of the lawn.
Tom: Yes, and right now you would not fertilize now. You do not want to promote any kind of growth because it’s cold outside, and your grass is dormant. Everybody’s yard looks terrible. In April and May, if the weather changes, that’s when you do your first fertilization. If you’re going to build your yard up, you have to make sure the grass is tall, and you only want to put the sand in so the tops of the grass can get sunlight. You have to do it very slowly. That’s the way you would do that which means you would get the grass to grow first, put a little sand in, let it grow through the sand, again, let it grow, and then put a little sand, and then let grow through the sand. It’s a slow process. People dump sand down, just kill all their grass, and you have to re-sod.
