At least 60 times a day, thieves broke into and robbed Houston homes, according to a July 2010 story in the Houston Chronicle. That’s a break-in about every 30 minutes. Thieves typically come in through doors or windows. Even if locked, windows are the weakest point of entry to your home. Security window film provides an added layer of protection.
Window security film differs from solar window film. Some security window film products do block solar radiation. But, the primary purpose of security film is to make windows harder to penetrate. It also prevents shards of flying glass from injuring anyone near a breaking window.
What is security window film?
At 4 to 14 mil, security window film is significantly thicker than solar control film. Solar film is generally 1.5 to 2 mil thick. Another difference is found in installation. Solar control film is applied only to the visible part of the window. Security window film, on the other hand, is installed into the window system itself. This process is known as anchoring.
Even though a window may break, it remains adhered to the film. In most cases, the window is intact, anchored in its frame. The film’s strength, coupled with its elasticity and resistance to tearing can stop someone ofrom walking thorugh a pane of glass.
Security film protects you from weather and yourself
There are other causes of glass breakage. Aside from crime, extreme weather events or occasional wayward baseball. Flying debris is a primary cause of glass breakage during storm season. Without a protective film in place, airborne objects can strike windows. A smashed out window can allow wind and water can enter your home.
Although it won’t prevent glass breakage, security window film helps hold glass in the window frame. It acts as a temporary wind and water barrier until a storm passes and the glass can be replaced.
What matters most in any glass breakage is how the glass behaves after breaking. When a person impacts a pane of glass, it can trigger what’s known as the “guillotine effect.” By the time a person realizes what’s happened, there’s little time to back-track. Gravity soon cases the glass to fall and cause injury.
3M Security window film from Solar-X can also be fitted to residential sliding doors and glass doors. This is particularly important where children are present. Another smart place to install it is in risk areas such as sliding doors leading to swimming pools. It’s not uncommon, due to surface water glare or slippery surfaces, for someone to walk through sliding glass doors near pool.
How safe are your windows?
Security window films won’t prevent glass from breaking. But, they make your home more difficult to enter and prevent broken glass injury. In that sense, security window film works invisibly to keep danger out of your home.
