I have an open patio that is a part of the structure of the home that was 70’s construction. The patio spans 14+ feet and was apparently built with inadaquate support across the open span.
The result is a significant sag across that span. I’m not sure what size lumber they used but I suspect it was paired 2X6’s.
At any rate, it isn’t budgetarily feasible to go to the extreme of ripping off a large section of roof and redoing the support and the span is an outside wall (bearing wall?). I’m thinking of adding a metal post support directly under the sag and bringing the sag back to plumb. The sag is not really evident to the naked eye but, after snapping a plumb line for the addition of guttering across the span, it becomes very obvious that guttering will be way out of kilter even with a modest 1/4 inch slope over a 10 foot section of gutter.
If I go the adjustable post approach, will this cause problems with roof leaks, etc if the span is forced back into plumb? Any other thoughts or ideas?
